You can't beat the Road to Hana in Maui for waterfalls and incredibly scenic coastlines. It seems every couple miles you hit a new awe-inspiring location to shoot. Most do the Road to Hana in around 2-3 hours each way. A real photographer will want to spend a couple days at least in Hana and spend full days traveling the road.

There's so much to be shot in Maui. From the sunny beaches of the South, to the alien landscapes of Haleakala Crater, it's a photographers dream.

Though all the islands posses their own magic spots. Hopefully more will share in their own favorites.
I will totally agree with that. In fact, that Shell Station that everyone stops at before they start their trip to Hana sells a CD you pop as you are leaving that gas station. It tells you that up ahead on the left is the small coastal town of Piaa. Great place to wakeboarding and windsurfing in the afternoon. This CD tells a story of the history of Maui and the Road to Hana. It's done very well and the timing is based on the average driving speed of the road. It tells you up ahead there will be a turnout around the next turn on the right side and you will see such and such waterfall.
That CD can sure make finding good locations for pictures so much easier. I hope this was helpful to our readers.Mahalo
The Makena and La Perouse (south maui...south of Kihei, south of Wailea...) area is wonderful for photography (and swimming, snorkeling, diving, boating, whale watching, hiking, sight seeing.....) However, just as important as the location is the time. Late afternoon and sunset will provide the best lighting for the south shore sites although early morning lighting is good too. The same is true for up on Haleakala, early morning and late afternoon/sunset time will afford the best time for good photographs. But, beware, it is COLD up there in the morning!!
Hi Ken,
I love Makena State Park and that seems like it would be a wonderful area to live at. I love this area during a full moon with the moonlight reflecting off the water and all of the neighboring islands like ghosts. I have seen the sunset and the full moon come up at the same time here haven't figured out how to capture both in the same photo.
