Great idea!

For now, I suggest anyone that wants to do this write a forum post with the title "Please Critique!" and hopefully we'll get some art school brutal honesty. Put that title and attach the image(s) in question.
This is a good start, Bryan.

I think the best thing you can do to promote yourself on this site is to write blog posts about your shoots with some example photos included. I feature all new blog posts on the 1st page, if they're worth contributing. That means blog posts that have value to our readers, be they future clients or fellow photographers.

Also, writing in the forums, and posting photos and information to your personal page help bring traffic to you.

Good luck, and thanks for participating. I know of many photographers that get business from this site (especially the ones that contribute regularly.)
I agree! Good analogy. If you can make lasting alliances with your "competition", everyone involved benefits.

Yes, go to the top of the page and hit the blog button. On that page should be "+ Add a Blog Post". Go there and write something, then when an administrator is on next, one of us will feature it on the home page. Everyone on the site is welcome to use this feature. It's a great way to contribute to the site and promote ones business.

Just make sure the blog posts aren't 100% advertising. We don't mind if you advertise your business, but just try to add some value. Ex. "Here's a couple photos of my last photo shoot. You'll see that the mother in the portrait has a broken leg. She told me a funny story on how it happened...etc..." So long as your adding something fun or informative, we'll feature you. Maybe write about something you learned, or about an upcoming event, or whatever you want that is interesting.

Promoting your photography business is a full time job. The web is pretty important these days, and any additional positive exposure you can claim on the internet is a good thing.
Aloha, I got a call yesterday for makeup artists and this was the very first site I went too. A lot of mainstream movies are now going into production in Kauai,Maui and Oahu. Clint Eastwood is filming the movie "Hereafter" and will have downtown Lahaina blocked off Jan.12-16th with three film locations on that island. We also have "Battleship" going into production in March and they will be taking the USS Missouri out of drydock and put her underway to just outside of Pearl Harbor and bring her back in. They will have a number of film crews on ship and a few in the air. This will last a week and then many locations throughout Oahu until Oct. or November. The sequel for "Pirates" is suppose to go into production soon also.
All of these new productions are due to new Film Commisioner John Mason for the state of Hawaii. He is helping to stop runaway productions to Canada and other countries and bringing them here to Hawaii. We are going to see a lot more production companies looking for locations, photographers, videographers, makeup artists, extras, actors, security, craft services and regulars folks like me and you.
So a section for movie work might be helpful and useful. I don't know what needs to be done to accomplish this and I would like to hear input from "others" as Lost is in production now. Most of these production companies are looking for people under craigslist and put out ads there. You may want to take a look yourselves and copy those ads for here maybe?
Thanks for sharing, Todd! You're right, we're seeing a lot more film work over here (especially on Oahu.) I'll see if we can't set something up on this site to help people a little better in this area.
I'd like to see a "Tools" section or "Resources" section. This could be new apps, discount offers, reviews or tools to help us get more business and stay connected.

There are many, many groups that we can get involved in as photographers. "Hawaii Photography" is the cleanest one I've seen for our market. The value to me are the ones that get me more business and help me to be more efficient. I'm still waiting for someone to develop a SAFE app that plugs in my contact info and password when I need it.

I like the idea of Blastoff because it keeps many of your important apps in one place, similar to Safari browser, although, it's limited to their list of apps. Google might be developing an app for this or something similar. With all of these places we need to stay connected to on the net, it would be nice if someone could develop a home base for photographers...

Wouldn't it be great to have a tool that takes care of your reciprocal links, your blogs, forums, twitters, facebooks, myspace, linkedin, emails and contacts, in one place? Some day...over the rainbow...

in the mean time, a "Resources" section would be nice.
Excellent Idea! We need to think about this more. I'm not really sure what we could add to it. Why don't we start a Forum Thread for photographers to add their favorite resources. Then after a few months, I'll build a page that links from the top navigation with direct links and information on each.

Great idea! Here is the new thread: http://www.hawaiiphotography.com/forum/topics/best-photo-resources
The Photographers Group, I put your last comment list on the new forum thread shown above. Thank you!
Mahalo!
Don't you think this site are little bit bore?

Shall we upgrade this site in to explore the more interesting topics? To explore the hawaii photography, and the mean time doing business with the local business and the photographer

Several Suggestions:

1. Categorize the main tropics as followed"
A. Equipment Tropic: Introduce the Upcoming technology, Equipments review, Places to get the equipment, and become a platform for the business to promote their advertising; and Used Equipments.

B. Exploring the Hawaii: Favorite or secret places to take photos, Explaining the Hawaii's golden time and weather for the photo taking, and at the mean time we can promote the Hawaii's Travel Business.

C. Models: Top Local Models; creating a platform for photographer to upload their shots; local model contact info; Or create monthly contest or competition for the model photograph. Please see suggested Link:
for example: http://www.avbuzz.com/new_home/main_photo.php (From Hong Kong website)

C. Briefly Courses: Explain some basic technique for different typing of photography.

Too much to say; wait for next post.
You can always start your own Forum topics for these categories. Right now this site does pretty well in allowing photographers to display their work for free. It also allows photographers the ability to communicate with others in the community.

Please keep in mind that building contests, building courses, etc... all take time and money. This site is offered for free, and we make very little money off of our sponsorships. It's not entirely realistic to build courses and maintain monthly contests at this point.

Thank you for your input.
I joined this website to build my network of photography friends. I am also new to the island of Oahu and always hungry to photograph beautiful sceneries and people. Please kindly let me know who would like to tag team! Thank you!
