I'm curious to see how people feel about the denied permits for the LahainaTown Action Committee for this years Halloween events in Lahaina, Maui.

Opponents say that the costumes are scandalous and too provocative. This event should reflect Hawaiian culture, and is dangerous.

Proponents say that it's all in good fun, and a successful events with a tiny percentage of bad seeds. Lahaina is known as the meeting place for the ancient Hawaiians, also known for huge parties for all the neighboring islands to participate.

Halloween as I recall has nothing to do with Hawaiian culture. So therefor its not really a cultural event. Ybor City in Tampa FL hosts a Halloween event each year called Guavaween and it has nothing to do with guavas. Yet it is attended by nearly half a million people and rivals Mardi Gras and is notorious for provocative costumes and behavior. Its all in good fun. And oh yeah it generates millions to the local economy. Food for thought!!! www.guavaween.com
I was there for Halloween in 2001, right after the attacks at the World Trade Center. Where were the members of this Action Commitee then? Hawaii was hurt pretty bad and welcomed anyone who had the nerves to fly over there. I was told by many before 9/11 that 30,000 to 50,000 people fly in every year for this event. The estimate in 2001 was that there was only 7,000 of us that did make the trip. You just can't change your mind every year for this event or no one will show up. Then we'll have a few ignorant members to thank for this for years to come.
I'm hoping that people will post their images of Halloween this year. Let's get some really great photos of the best costumes!
Do you think that this committee can stop Halloween? I don't think so! Do you think that anyone knows about this committee or even cares? Again,I don't think so! This is generally the biggest event in Maui each year with the kick off of whalewatching season soon afterwards. I too look forward to seeing pictures of this event. Mahalo-Todd
I'd like to see the opponents propose a Halloween event that reflects Hawaiian culture because I, for one, am seriously curious about their stance on that one. As for the so-called danger, proper planning and precautions will ensure the safety of all in attendance - I've seen it done at concerts and sporting events way more rowdy and crazy than the Lahaina venue. And as for the "scandalous!" costumes...I really don't see parents bringing their young children to a huge Halloween party anyhow. just my $0.02, any action that prevents people from coming to the islands is not good for our visitor industry.

This year was still fun, despite the roads not being closed off. It seemed the traffic on Front Street consisted of a couple lazy tourists that we're too lazy to dress up and walk down, but mostly made up of Taxis. I'd say it was 95% taxis. Pretty sad really.

The restaurants and bars were jumping as usual. The positive energy was high as usual. Though the turnout was lessened due to the roads being open and the Lahaina Town Committee being denied the permit. It was another successful event though, with very few bad seeds and many incredible memories.

Let's hope the CRC has the insight to allow for the LTC's participation next year.
